 "Good price. Good TV" 2008-05-19
By James T. Brom (Flatwoods, KY)
The color on this set is fantastic. CNET has their version of set-up

with the various menu settings. I tried this and found the color

muted. Using a solid blue screen on an info channel, I went thur

each menu item using my own preferences. I ended up with a vibrant

3D looking picture on HighDef channels (some 720i and some really

knockout 1080i). The standard def 420i look standard. Also bought

a Toshiba DVD recorder with 1080 upconvert. This unit makes standard

DVD's look quite good. I think the menu settings have no magic formula;

each has to set their own. I did not have the green problem mentioned in other reviews.

"Great Motion, Terrible Greens, but Calibratable" 2007-11-05
By Bob Carpenter (New York, NY)
There is a terrible problem with the green rendering on my set, both from digital cable, and fed from the Toshiba A35 HD-DVD player. There's an overall green cast and very bright green artifacts in shadows that is so annoying the TV's barely watchable.

On the other hand, the motion rendering is fantastic. 1080P at 24 frames/second looks really smooth as does 720P sports broadcasts.

Note Added Dec 2007: I finally had the set professionally color calibrated. Turns out both green and red are way off in this set's color space as shipped from the factory. The good news is that a combination of service menu settings and the excellent color/gamma controls in this set got it back in line and it's now amazing. I'd actually recommend getting any TV calibrated because the factory settings for all sets are way too bright and contrasty, which makes it basically impossible to do a side-by-side in a showroom.

 "Great TV" 2007-09-14
By Sven Zethelius (Renton, WA United States)
My first HD TV. Hooking it up to a media PC is easy. Sound quality out of the built in speakers meets my needs. It has more than enough inputs. Picture quality from cable (non HD) has some noticeable pixelation when enlarged. The playback of DVDs is sharp. My only real complaint is its a little slow to turn on. Takes about 30 seconds from hitting the power button until it actually starts showing picture.

 "Awesome LCD TV" 2009-05-24
By N. Martowski (MA)
This is a fantastic TV for both the quality and the money. The 720 actually has a better picture than the 1080. The 1080 blows out the whites quite a bit and didn't have as good deep blacks. It comes with many high-end inputs and the look is great. I would not trade this TV for any of the more expensive ones if someone offered to swap. Frankly, the picture is undeniably sharp and I watch a lot of sports in HD. Let's just say I've really been enjoying the NBA playoffs this year. If anyone is thinking about taking the plunge into the HD world, you can not go wrong with this TV. I'd be happy to respond to any questions but if you go look at this TV and compare, I think you'll be sold.

 "I love it!!!" 2009-02-08
By Valerie B (Portland, OR USA)
What can I say??? I am thoroughly enjoying this HDTV. I too was influenced by the Consumer Reports "Best Buy" tag and picked one of these up at a locally owned area retailer for $999. Installation in my home was delayed while I decided whether to bite the cable bullet or not (I didn't), but since hooking up a $20 Radio Shack antenna have been wowed on a daily basis. The OTA HD picture on this TV is fantastic!

I've got this hooked up to VHS/DVD combo and picture there is awesome as well. Have yet to try HDMI...

Bottom line--fantastic set. I LOVE IT!

"Just an Excellent TV, Beyond It's Price" 2008-04-18
By Evan Hochberg
This TV is absolutely terrific. It's out of box video quality doesn't really need to be adjusted beyond personal preference. Doesn't look the best in store because it's sitting next to 5000$ Samsungs, but once it's home, it's truly incredible. I never thought I'd be able to afford quality like this. Do not hesitate, put away buyers remource and get it. It can be found for $800 plus tax and shipping if you look hard. If you can't find it for less that $1400, it may be better to look at a samsung, but I still can't say enough positive things about this TV.

I'm not big into sound because my apartment is small and I have to keep quiet anyway, so this is the only area where it may be lacking, but it's got so many connections for 5.1, etcc, it doesn't matter.

Please, do yourself a favor. It's way more affordable than it should be. Seems like one of those too-good-to-be-true deals, but it's not.

"My TV has Infant Death Syndrome and Toshiba says 3 months to fix" 2008-04-14
By J. Day (Alabama United States)
The TV itself is great. I purchased it December 2007. Everything was going great and we were enjoying it a lot until the power supply went out in the TV (March 2008). We contacted the store we purchased the TV from and they sent someone out to take a look. After confirming the power supply needed to be replaced they told us that it would be June or July before they could get the parts. The repair company and the store we purchased the TV from both said that having the customer contact Toshiba directly usually results in a better response on getting parts.

We contacted Toshiba directly, they assigned a rep to our problem, and we haven't heard anything back since. Each time we call Toshiba to get an update on the parts for our TV, they tell us that the rep has all the information and will call us back. They refuse to let us speak with the rep they assigned to the case, and they refuse to let us speak with a manager at Toshiba's call center.

When asked why it takes so long to get parts for a new model TV, the response from Toshiba was, "Well, we make a lot of TVs and some of these parts come from overseas".

I have had other Toshiba products and been very happy with them, but this experience with their customer service has turned me off of purchasing Toshiba products in the future.

The real kick in the pants... we even purchased the "extended warranty" when we bought the TV and it has done absolutely nothing for us.

The TV is really nice... when it's working but for the last month or so all I've had is a big dead black square hanging over my fireplace.

Something is disturbing is that before purchasing this TV I couldn't find any bad reviews of this TV (a few complaints about the "green problem"). After having the TV for a few months, I see that other people are having the same type of issues with their TVs and getting the same response from Toshiba's customer service department.

If you are getting ready to purchase this TV, I'd wait a few more months to see if any more bad reviews pop up around the Net.

"Excellent LCD for the price, Toshiba all the way!!" 2008-04-01
By Pirate Morgan (Out To Sea)
This is my third Toshiba TV, sold one to make room for this one and still have a 50" Rear Projection that has NEVER given me any trouble eight years running(Knock on wood). For the money -- 42" for $1,019 including S&H from another web site, this is hands down ... THE LCD to get. If your looking for LCD's that is. Good picture quality with standard definition programming despite the poor standard def. signal we get from our cable company. I have seen reviewers complain about this TV's standard definition picture, but you must realize the old addage ... junk in = junk out. No TV can "clear up" a poor signal. Remember also that these TV's are meant to be viewed from a distance, be sure to buy size appropriate for the room as too big means a grainy looking picture. Unbelievable, but in the case of High Def. TV's ... bigger isn't always better a.k.a. size DOES matter!! This sets High Definition picture is incredible ... looks 3D. Don't worry about it being only 720P as cable providers (at least mine) are only feeding 1080i anyways and it fills this screen size nicely with excellent detail. You can count the blades of grass during PGA tournaments or watch the dust flying around each contestant during their post-performance review on American Idol(Somebody needs to dust out there in California!). If you want a High Def. set above 42" in size, you'll want 1080p capability to reduce possible pixelization. I don't have Blue-Ray or the defunct HD-DVD to review but my 480p Progressive DVD player picture is very clean on this TV. If you buy a High Def. TV you ABSOLUTEY need a "High Def. Set-up Disc" such as AVIA, etc. Borrow one from a friend, maybe Netflix rents 'em, or straight up buy one with the coin you saved buying this tv. These DVD's help tune in the picture as most TV's are sent out of the factory with extreme color saturation and brightness (an attempt to stand out from the crowd in the showroom). And you ABSOLUTELY have to somehow get High Def. content running through this TV such as "Over-the-air" rabbit ears, HD cable box, HD satellite box, Blue-Ray player, or the now-defunct HD-DVD player. Not doing so should be listed as one of the seven deadly sins... Failure to provide a high tech., high def., flat screen LCD TV an appropriate signal!!!! PS- Always connect equipment with the highest level connector available to you. Ex- If your cable provider box has an HDMI output ... use it. You'll get the best picture that way. And don't be fooled by "Monster Cables" for HDMI cables (or any other cables for that matter). Unless you have a "Theatre Rooom" and spell and call it such ... you're an average joe or jane like me. That means go to a web reseller (mycablemart, ect.) and buy an HDMI cable for $ instead of $$$$$. A digital signal is either there or it's not, no such thing as "signal degradation" like an analog connection.

As for "problems" other reviewers are having here ... 1)Yes, they're right, these speakers can't handle a lot of bass. My old analog TV couldn't either. They're simply not made for a wide range of acoustic, Not too many TV speakers are.

2) Delay in start up ... read the manual people! States that is a power saving energy star feature that CAN be set off for instant power up.

3)Sluggish remote ... I do have to agree with this one a little, not extreme though. And when sun is glaring toward it (Infrared Radiation) it does have a less of a remote "field of vision". Ehhh, I draw the blinds then and it just makes the picture look that much better ;-)

I have had my 52" for 4 years and am on my 3 bulb @ $250/ea, not to mention the $368 to have a ballast replaced. Our salesman conveniently left out the problems with a DLP. We should have opted for the LCD and I will not be buying another unreliable Toshiba.

 "Avoid Toshiba DLP" 2009-12-21
By Katherine E. Metz
This is an annoying and expensive choice for any family and it should be avoided. You need to plan to buy a new lamp, which will cost you about $218.00, every year. That doesn't include any fees for service calls too. A TV that will fail at any moment and require a new lamp is a terrible thing. Calling Toshiba service is a nightmare too.

Whatever you do - steer clear of Toshiba HDLP tv's!! We have had ours for four years and are on our 4th lamp replacement. I suggest doing an internet search before you buy, because we are not alone!! There have been serious problems with the HDLP lamps from Toshiba. Nothing more frustrating than to be watching your favorite show or ball game and have the lamp burn out and be without your TV until you get a replacement!!!

By Laptop (east coast)
I have had this set for almost 3 years and a house move without a single problem. Yes, there is a light spot in the center of the screen that is visible when it's not on.. It has not impacted the picture quality that I can decern. Recently, the bulb went. I remembered buying an extend bulb replacement policy. I was told when I purchased the set that the bulbs would need to be replaced. What I did not figure was it would take 3 years for the first bulb to expire and my policy expired in two years.. We have watch at least three hours a day for three years = 3000 hours. not bad.. the extended warrentees was a waste as they tend to be... great technology.. better than my 42" Panasonic the LCD

 "$1600 for 3 years of usage" 2007-11-10
By Argylesok (Dayton, Ohio)
Loved this TV until it started malfunctioning and finally quit working just after the warranty expired. We purchased the the extended warranty from Best Buy and they came out once but couldn't recreate the problem. When it finally quit, it was just two weeks after the extended Best Buy warranty expired. The set is now defunct, spent $199 so far for a local technician to tell us it may be able to be repaired for a minimum of $500. Toshiba and Best Buy refused to do anything to help even though we had reported the problem during the warranty period.

Loved this TV until it broke just after the warranty expired. Made a mistake and purchased the extended warranty from Best Buy which ran concurrent with the factory warranty so I was shorted a year of warranty. Had I purchased the Toshiba factory warranty after getting home, the set would still be under warranty. The set is now defunct, spent $350 thus far to repair vertical problem and now technician claims he can't find a needed tube for additional cost. Probably will trash the set.

 "VERY bad customer service" 2004-01-14
By Bill Livingston (Green River, WY USA)
Had no problems with this unit until i HAD a problem.I bought mine 1/16/02 & have been pleased with the performance till early in December when the screen went black and liquid started spilling out the bottom !!!! It has been setting in my living room for 6 weeks now ( black screen, liquid dripping etc).
Atechnician came by about a month ago, charged me $63 & said he could fix it but could not warranty his work.
Long story short; I've been getting the runaround for over a month now since it became apparent that the unit needs to be replaced. Looks like i'll have to rely on small claims court to get Toshiba to honor the warranty. BEWARE

The Toshiba 61H70 is a 61-inch projection television that comes with all the trimmings. A picture tube--or cathode ray tube (CRT)--has an electron gun that presents an image by sending the electron beam to the tube's faceplate. The Toshiba 61H70 has three such tubes, in red, green, and blue. They use fine phosphor for high resolution, brightness, and color purity.

For fine tuning, use the remote control to adjust nine points on the screen. The result is very good focus and superior picture quality.

With A/V outputs you can send the audio/video signal to a VCR for recording. The fixed audio outputs can also be sent to an A/V receiver, and provide a cleaner signal than variable audio outputs. An extra set of front A/V inputs allows you to connect a camcorder or other portable device.

The Toshiba 61H70 has ColorStream HD component video inputs, the best inputs to use for today's high-resolution digital sources, such as a DVD player or an HDTV set-top box.

The universal remote has been programmed to operate the TV, most VCRs, and cable boxes. Many of the keys are illuminated for easy access when watching TV in a dark room. The remote accesses all TV functions with an icon-based on-screen display. This full-featured system can be operated in English, French, or Spanish. In addition, the remote learns the codes of other remotes.

You can input your 12 favorite channels and easily scan through only those stations. Pressing the return button sends you to the last channel you were viewing. This allows you to easily switch back and forth between two channels. You can label your channels by putting the call letters (e.g. ABC, HBO) on the screen along with the station numbers.

At the touch of a button, a sleep timer allows you to fall asleep and program the TV to turn off in 15-minute intervals for up to three hours.

Any time you press the mute button, closed captioning automatically engages. So, if one viewer needs to answer the telephone, another can still read along.

Now you can watch two channels at once, or find out what's on all your favorite channels. Two built-in tuners allow picture-in-picture without the use of a VCR. In single box mode, you can change the size of the sub-picture, move it to different locations on the screen, or freeze it. Six- and nine-box modes allow continuous channel previewing in multiple sub-pictures along the bottom of the screen. You can also use picture-outside-picture, whereby half the screen is used for the main image, while the other half is used for nine sub-pictures.

The new V-chip lets parents decide which show ratings are appropriate for their children. The TV will block out the audio and video of any program with an inappropriate rating. Parents use a code to override the system.

Very good overall but a few annoying glitches. The set is very difficult to watch when the screen turns black as the screen mirrors everything in the room when lights are on.The directions in the manual could use a great deal of improvement. when directions are followed the desired result is not always accomplished.. The picture is excellent if you can control the lights. The set is very heavy and this resulted in delivery problems. You must be very knowledgeable if you are going to set up the wiring of vcrs, dvd, Direct TV, Cspan, Roof top antenna ,cable etc. You must also spend a lot of time reading and playing with the remote to find all the goodies this TV can do.

"TOSHIBAs Exceptional Looking 61 inch Picture" 2001-07-15

Besides having a good picture this TOSHIBA is an excellent Projection TV in the 4 by 3 aspect ratio. Remember that term: 4 by 3. Don't pass this one up! Manufacturers are moving toward the 16 by 9 aspect ratio. For conventional antenna, cable or satellite TV broadcasts and VHS playback this TOSHIBA is the one of a handful of the best Projection sets available. Get them while they are still around, 4 by 3 aspect ratios that is. Many people going with the 16 by 9 sets are not happy because there are very few HD signals out there at least for the next 4 or 5 years. 4 by 3 is the way to go right now. People are complaining because when viewing a widescreen program on a 4 by 3 set you get black bars on the top and bottom. On 16 by 9 sets you get black bars on the left and right sides of the screen all the time unless you watch a wide screen program! That means that you are going to get black bars on the sides for over 90 percent of what you are going to be watching for the next 5 or 6 years. You see, the FCC, the major Broadcasting Networks and Cable companies still can't agree on how they are going to broadcast High Definition Television signals. And that decision does not look like it is gong to be made any time soon! Stay with the 4 by 3 aspect ratio like this Projection set has. You can't go wrong and you will be much happier. Many people are returning their 16 by 9 projection sets according to an area dealer because they can't stand the black bars on the right and left. Remember to stay with the 4 by 3 aspect ratio! I have seen this TOSHIBA set and it really has an excellent picture. It is truly incredible that you are looking at a 61 inch projected picture.

"Sharp Picture and Exact Colors" 2001-07-11

Projection set technology has come a long way but the current television market is in a state of flux. We keep hearing about HDTV or High Definition Television but what does it all mean to you? High Definition Television refers to a complete product and/or system with the vertical display of 1080i (interlaced) or higher lines of resolution. The aspect ratio has to be capable of displaying a 16:9 image at the minimum resolution level. (All HDTV is in the 16:9 image). The current standard for color television in the United States is called NTSC (National Television System Committee). It is based on 525 horizontal scanning lines capable of displaying a 4:3 image. Many cable companies are resisting the change to HDTV and want to carry only the NTSC standard. The FCC wants the networks to start broadcasting HDTV but they are now also resisting because they can't settle on a conversion system. Currently satellites are carrying a few HDTV signals, but they are far and few in number and show little signs of increasing. Don't forget HDTV signals have to be converted so you can watch them. Then you have Television manufactures who are getting way ahead of themselves. Many are pushing the HDTV formatted screen on most of their projection sets, which is 16:9. If you are still watching cable TV, VHS videos and Laserdiscs you are in big trouble. You are only going to get a picture in the center of your 16:9 set with big black bars on the sides. The best way to go is with a 4:3 projection set, like this one, which is going to give you the full frame. You are going to get the entire screen you paid for. In addition projection sets have come a long way. This is a state of the art set. The image is clear and sharp and the colors are very exact. You can't get much better.

 "Crystal Clear..." 2001-02-11
By Jonathan Madamba (Los Angeles, CA USA)
And I don't even have cable! It's like having a very large tube tv. You can see the facial details on news anchors that usually end up over looked for the lack of detail. The blacks are bulletproof, deep, and unfogged. Watching a DVD on this is second only to the local cineplex.

I was thinking of getting a wide screen (16:9) projection tv, but, since HD will not be universal until 2005, I prefer to see a full screen image since I watch more normal television (network or cable) than dvds.

Note, if you buy a wide screen projection tv (16:9), the television broadcasts have to be stretched or letterboxed. If you watch them letterboxed, the black bars might burn themselves on the screen if you watch normal television more than 15% of the time. Or you can watch normal television (network or cable) with a distorted stretched image.

I picked the 4:3 and I love it!

This is one great projection Tv. Side to side comparison with the Sony HDTV, I would have to say it beats the Sony on all counts. I like the convergence set up better than the sony because you can see the 9 points on the screen the sony has one and you don't know if it is right or not. The sony also only has one component input and the Toshiba has two.
