"Defective Panel, backordered, over a month wait time expected" 2010-03-18
By Mulling It Over
The panel started going bad at around six months, and I opened a warranty support ticket. The problems started out with a brief flicker after the panel was powered on, and eventually degraded into a ghost image with horizontal bars, and finally one half of the panel started failing to refresh at all. Since doing contacting warranty support, the panel has completely failed and now is unusable. Unfortunately the replacement panel is on back order, so I won't have a working television screen for at least a month. This is a pretty big disappointment, since not only has Toshiba's hardware failed, but their support process has failed as well. Definitely my last Toshiba purchase.

 "BUYER BEWARE...." 2009-06-02
By J. Robins (Richmond, Va United States)
I have had this television for a total of 20 months...and now it is worthless. The video panel suddenly went bad. A Toshiba certified repairman (after driving 2 hours) diagnosed the problem and reported $2700 for just a new panel, no labor or shipping included in that price. I regrettably didn't purchase an extended warranty so I am completely screwed. Toshiba customer support was rude and unempathetic to the point where I will never invest in anything "Toshiba." Just thought sharing my horror story may save someone else the heartache.....

"screens are graded either number 1,2, or 3. He told me that Sony and Toshiba are the only manufacturers to use only number 1 graded screens"

And you believed him? I dont.

You think Samsung uses a cheaper screen? I dont.

Just bought this Toshiba REGZA 46RV530U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV .

No specific comment yet ,too early - probably low frequency of repair and excellent picture quality.

But dont believe everything a salesguy tells you (or tells someone else who "knowledgably" passes it on to you).

They push what's best for them to push and will say anything to that end.

"Great TV for the money, except for the uneven blacks." 2008-11-14
By Antony Evans (Bmore, MD)
Toshiba REGZA 46RV530U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

After looking for a good deal on a 46 or 47 inch LCD, I found this for about $1100.00 including shipping. I took a look at the screen at my local Best Buy, which had it for about $1600.00 plus tax and shipping, and I was sold. I bought it home and immediately noticed areas in the screen that were lighter than others. The only time it can be noticed is when the there is black bands at the top and bottom. If the screen is full, the picture is great. I'm going to Toshiba for help on this so we'll see.

The other major problem I have, and I think it's a Comcast issue and not one with the TV, is the audio blanks out for a second every few minutes or so on analog channels. HD, DVD and game works fine. After researching, I found many folks have the same issue with HDMI and cable, even though theirs is usually on HD channels. Anyway, it's the best deal I could find for the money and about worth what I paid. I'll probably go with Sony or Samsung when I'm ready to step it up.

"Best Buy for HDTV!! No Problems! A+++++++" 2008-10-14
By Linda L (Las Vegas, NV)
Received the TV a few weeks ago. Amazon delivery was fabulous. They unpacked and set up, even helped take the old stand into another room for me.

Picture is great, easy to understand remote. I set up my Bose Wave radio for speakers and it is a few tads below surround sound. The sound quality of the TV is average to above average. However, since I had the radio I figured I would give it a whirl. I did upgrade to a Monster Cable. I am not really sure it was worth the extra cost. I am electronically challenged and hate change and I do not have any problems understanding this set.

I researched the internet for hours doing price comparisons, quality, warranty, etc and found this brand, model and size were the best value for my family and myself. If you are on the fence between two TV's, buy this one!

"Initially a good TV, but then...." 2009-04-25
By Kyle O'Connor
We have owned this TV for under 5 years. It has been a fairly decent TV until just recently. We started having problems where the TV screen would go red and then shut off. It started happening more frequently until now we can't even get the TV on for a second. After some online research and talking to a TV repair man it turns out that the red bulb went bad and they don't make the bulbs anymore or a replacement. This seems to be a fairly common problem with this TV from visiting online forums.

i have had this tv for about 3 years now. i am totally impressed with it. i have charter hd boxed hooked to it and wow what a great picture on all hd channels. i was in the market to purchase a plasma tv ,but after doing more investagating on them ,they only last about 5 to 8 years and repairs can not be done on them. with this tv all you normally have to do is replace the picture bulb. so if you want a great hd tv ,purchase this one,you won't be disapointed.

 "What a great TV!" 2007-10-23
By James I. Leger
I have had this television for about 2 years. The picture is great, the sound is great, and it did not cost me an arm and a leg. I was originally looking for a 32" LCD or plasma, but when I compared the picture quality and pricing, the 46" Toshiba projection made more sense. It was much less expensive than the plasma or LCD, and the picture looked great. No, you can't hang it on the wall... but who cares? I love this TV!

 "Beware of image burn" 2005-05-14
By Read the Manual (Central NY)
I bought the Toshiba 46 inch rear projection TV in November. Decent set, HD looks really good. Good sound quality. Overall a good TV.

This was my first big screen rear projection purchase. I'm not one to read the operation manuals so this problem I am having with "image burn?" is my fault. But the TV itself makes it hard to avoid this problem. I knew veiwing the PC on tv and video games are bad for rear projections. But so is watching the TV in "natural" mode. In the manual is staets a few time that you should watch programs sing the entire screen, no bars on the top and botton (widescreen dvds sometimes cause that) or bars on the right and left or the "natural" settings. OK, I'm fine with that now that I know, might have been nice if the sales guy mentione dthis to me :(

Any how, when you turn on your set it always defaults to the natural setting. I have an HD digital cable box and it only uses the "whole" screen on the HD channels. So if Toshiba knows about this problem why not have the TV default to full screen? It's a bit of a pain to turn on the TV (especially since I use the cable remote) and then set the TV to a setting other than natural.

I had the TV repair guy out (best buy warranty) and he said he sees alot of this with rear projection TV's but usually not in only 6 months of use. (this burning actually happened after 4 months if use) Replacing the tubes cost as much as the TV.

Learn from my mistake if you purchase this TV :)

 "Great TV!!!" 2009-02-19
By C. Manahan (Tennessee)
This is one fantastic TV! I have had it for about a month now and have enjoyed every minute. The picture is sharp (really deep blacks) and the 120Hz technology really does make a difference. I was amazed at the lack of pixelation, especially when watching sports and blu-rays. I bought this and a sony bdp 350 from Amazon Warehouse Deals (both open box units) and each has performed beautifully. They shipped free and INCREDIBLY fast. I cannot recommend this product enough.

I'm still playing around with the settings but even the defaults look nice!

Audio and video display are crystal clear! Especially watching last Sundays SuperBowl!

This set is performing well. The white glove delivery set it up and all I had to do was set back and enjoy. Wasn't sure about ordering a television of this size online, but I would have no hesitation about ordering anything of this size again. My sister had bought a 42 inch Toshiba Regza from a store and I bought this 46 inch unit at less cost than her purchase. The set has excellent picture and the sound is better than I expected. The menu is simple to navigate and make any changes you may want to tweak.....I would recommend this set to anyone looking for a good price verses performance.

 "Toshiba 46XV540U is great!!" 2009-01-05
By Daniel J. Filice (Burbank, CA United States)
I purchased the Toshiba 46XV540U at my favorite volume wherehouse store for $1199 one week ago. I originally planned on buying a Panasonic 42" 1080p Plasma, but after discussing Plasma panels with some video engineers at work, I was NOT convinced that it would be free from image retention (burn-in), especially since I watch a lot of 4:3 programming and I didn't want to lay awake at night worrying about having left-right bars burned into the screen. Then I set my mind on either a Sony W4100 or Z4100, but my local wherehouse only had a 40" Sony. The 46" cost too much. I settled on a Sony because I own a Sony 55" SXRD, which I find stunning, and as good as any Plasma or LCD, and it's 120Hz and 1080p/24 display. Then I saw the Toshiba, which stated that it had similar specs as my SXRD. After obsessing and doing extensive research, I decided to buy the Toshiba. I was hesitant since I really liked what I saw on the Sony LCDs. Out of the box, the Toshiba looked good, but the levels needed to be toned down. I initially used a THX DVD (any DVD that is THX certified, like Toy Story, Monsters, Inc), and the disc has a THX setup menu that will help you adjust any TV to look pretty darn good. Later I used the Video Essentials DVD for further adjusting. After setting the color, tint, brightness and contrast, I couldn't be happier. One of my biggest necessities of any HDTV is that it displays SD (standard def) channels well, and I'm happy to say that this Toshiba does a great job. HD on my Charter cable looks stunning in 1080i. Blu-Ray is jaw-dropping. I also watch a lot of sports and the 120Hz option looks great, and from what I've read in test reports, the Toshiba handles this better than Sony, and I condider the Sony better than Samsung for this. Anyways, the Toshiba colors are excellent, it gives deep blacks, I don't see any pixel blurring or lag and fast motion on sports looks rock-solid. AND, this 46" Toshiba cost about $500 less than a similar-sized Sony. The speakers in the Toshiba give satisfactory audio, especially for my bedroom, where I have this set. The image looks pretty good even at extreme angles. The screen is matte-finish, which is essential in my opinion to control reflections. The bezel of the Toshiba is gloss black. I would have preferred a satin-black bezel, but no problem. The Toshiba remote is well laid out. I recently owned a Toshiba 50" CRT rear projection set and I loved the remote on that set because of two things: 1) Mute does a half-mute first, then a full mute with a second press. Half-mute allows you to turn down the TV if answering a phone but you can still hear the sound. 2) The Channel Return will actually return you to a previous Input. So, if you are watching a DVD then switch to a cable channel to check out a football score, you can immediately return to the DVD by pressing the RTN button without the need of it bringing up the numerical menu or cycling through the Input options to get back to the DVD. This new Toshiba remote keeps these two great functions!! The 46RV540U is a terrific TV!

 "Awesome but deadly" 2009-02-03
By Shawn A. Dillon (Tampa, FL USA)
I purchased this set on sale at Sears and they even price matched it to the price that CompUSA was selling it at. I got a great deal on it. I took it home hooked it all up and ran into trouble right away with my HD Cable box. I live in the Tampa, Florida area and have Brighthouse networks cable. They use a Scientific Atlanta Exploreer 8300HDC HD DVR box. I could operate the cable box with the cable company remote with no problem. As soon as I would turn on the Toshiba LCD, the remote would no longer work. Turn the TV off and the remote worked just fine. I went through 3 different cable boxes with Brighthouse networks. I then had a Sears repair tech come out to check the TV and make sure nothing was wrong with it. Upon inspection he decided to call Toshiba directly and see what was going on. Toshiba admitted to having a problem with this model of cable box and they did not know what was causing the interference at this time. Their recommendation was to check with Brighthouse to see if they had a different brand of cable box. If they did not, then they (Toshiba) recommended returning the TV for a brand other than Toshiba.

So Brighthouse did not have a different brand which led to me returning the TV. I did this with great hesitation as the Toshiba had an excellent picture and sound. I really loved the TV and the features it had. I just wish it would have worked with my cable box.

I returned the TV with no problem and purchased a Sharp Aquos LC-46D65U. I set that TV up with no problem and there are no interference issues.

So like I said in the title, awesome TV but can be deadly to your cable box.

 "Better than the comparable 46" Sony/Sharp/Vizio" 2009-12-22

HD, Blu-Ray, & PS3 gaming look top notch on this LCD. Scrolling text looks clear w/ 120hz refresh rate. I got this from Costco and had the chance to compare the Toshiba side by side w/ the comparable 46" Sony, Sharp, Vizio & Samsung. The Toshiba & Samsung had the best picture quality & details in the blacks. No contrast ratio spec that I could find, however the darks have more detail than the Sony, Sharp & Vizio. The only difference between the Samsung & Toshiba was that the color on the Samung looked better, but for the price the Toshiba was the way to go. I've had it for 2 weeks and have not had any problems with it. At first I thought the menu screens were a bit basic and inefficient compared to the Sony menus, however after some time it actually is quite intuitive and has convenient shortcuts. I especially like how to switch between inputs, channels through favorites and or the channel history. I am very happy w/ this LCD TV.

On the second unit, the Menu popped up unprompted every five minutes. I returned it to the store and (foolishly) took home a third unit. The third one didn't turn on at all. I returned that one and bought a different brand.

Three units, three different problems, three returns in a span of 24 hours.

 "Great TV" 2010-01-04

I bought 2 of these, one for my office and the other for my basement. The office TV is hooked to my Dell laptop and is used as a presentation screen for client meetings. I was concerned about it's glossy screen since I am in an office with overhead lights, but no problems at all. I view it 30 degrees off center, as it sits over the end of a conference table, with me and the client on opposite sides of the table. Looks great and very clear on a VGA input. Very happy with both TVs. Speakers sound great, remote easy to use.

 "Very Happy, minor issue" 2009-12-10
By C. Burke (Old Forge, PA)
i bought this TV on some sale amazon had for 868.00, and i am positively thrilled with it. The screen is gorgeous and my blu-ray movies have never looked better. Plus, playing my xbox 360 or Playstation 3 in 1080p is priceless. It came virtually assembled, so pull from the box, plug in and away you go.

I DID have one issue. I own a DirecTV HD DVR, and for some reason or another, the TV interferes with the RF signals from all of my remote controls. A bizzare issue to say the least. I thought my DTV box was damaged, but it wasn't. After some internet research, I had learned that certain TV's can do this. If you disable this TV's auto-brightness setting (and you can do this by changing the overall picture scheme from auto to standard, or game or movie) it stops the sensor which causes the issue. I am tech savvy, but not an engineer, so I dont know why it does this. Apparently, certain Samsung TV's do the same.

Amazon did a great job getting it across the country as well. My wife and I love this TV!

 "Don't bother" 2009-12-09
By Ben B.
Great picture with 2 major problems:

The remote control for my cable box won't work for the first 10 minutes after the set is turned on. [cable box is comcast] (Others have had same feedback) It may not sound like a big deal but having to turn your TV on and off every time you want to change channels gets annoying really quick.

The HDMI inputs have trouble detecting video output from my cable box and DVD when the TV is first turned on. In order to get a picture I have to hit the "input" button 40-50 times until finally the set decides to start displaying video. Said differently, every time I turn on my TV I need to basically "jump start" it so I can get a picture. (As I understand this is a software "handshaking" issue)

Phone support was no help. I've spent hours on the internet and found nothing to solve either problem. There is no firmware fix for this so I have a tec coming out to my house to try and resolve.

If I had to do it over again I'd go with a better brand that has already invested the time in working out the bugs in their software.

"Great TV, bad service from Circuit City" 2009-12-03
By Jeremy C. Johnson (San Diego, CA)
I wanted to create a review for this TV, but also wanted to vent as I had trouble with Circuit City over it's delivery and I cannot put this review into their site because it contains a company's name (big surprise). I bought this TV mainly because of the great price and great reviews I found while searching for many months. I'm very glad to say that the TV more than lived up to the hype. This is my first HDTV so I may be biased, but it looks incredible. Very clear and crisp from every angle, video games look great, and movies are mind boggling! It also has low glare from the multiple lights in our living room and the base and border look great! My only issues were due to the poor customer service from Circuit City and I would advise buying anything big from them as it will only cause you heartache. If you can find this TV elsewhere at a good price, I would get it!!

I purchased this because consumer reports rated it a " Best Buy" Saying it had picture that rivaled many more expensive models. This model beat out Sony, LG, Samsung, Sharp and other big brands in its category.

Reviewers even said the picture quality rivaled LCD's costing over $2,000.

I already have a Toshiba and a sharp Aquos. I love my aquos so much and didnt think picture could get much better on an LCD.......well I was wrong. This Regza blew it out of the water. The Blu-rays look stunning.

I wish more channels broadcast in full 1080p. Most HD channels broadcast in 720p which is a rip off by the industry and short changes us who invest on great LCD's for optimal viewing.

I love playing Nintendo WII, Playstation and X-box on this...the 120hz technology keeps blazing fast picture crystal clear and not blurred as you would see with regular 60hz sets.

I just watched the movie 300 on blu-ray on this set to see how good the effects could be and I was Blown away.

I couldnt be happier and out of my 3 LCD TV's this is my number 1.
