"Side by Side vs Aquos 1080P and Regza Won!!!" 2009-12-29
By Twosome Ts (Toronto, Ontarion, Canada)
My husband does the research and was going top buy a 37" Sharp Aquos 1080P until he and I compared the two pictures with the same input (even alternated the connectors) and the Toshiba beat it every time for sharpness (no pun intended), color, clarity and the capture and display of movement, (pucks, etc during a game that was also viewed during the demo).

It was only a little bit less than the Sharp Aquos and 1080P seemed the better investment prior to the side by side comparison where the Regza never had any fuzziness and the Aquos did.

After to approximately two years, we have never had a problem and our Toshiba Regza picture is still as clear and sharp as when we brought it home. There are several Toshiba TVs out there and I can only speak to the Regza models which I am of the impression have a superior engine to their other Toshiba models.

Would we buy another one again, darn straight we would.

 "Wonderful set, but" 2008-12-26
By Anonymous (Boston, MA)
You can get it for less at a retail store. I paid $799 for this in Spring 2007 at my local Costco.. Circuit City and Best Buy wanted $1300!

While researching the set, I compared it (at Circuit City) to a Sony Bravia sitting next to it. Picture settings were the same and they were running the same feed.. the 37HL67 blew the Bravia away. And the fact that I could get it for almost $600 less, coupled with 3 HDMI when most sets this size only had 2 made it an easy purchase.

Standard def is as good as it can be. HD varies by channel and program, something you'll notice once you start watching programming.

Hockey and Basketball look GREAT, football and baseball.. look better on a plasma. PS3/XBOX 360/Wii all look amazing, as do Blu-ray movies.

Def. a worthwhile buy, but shop around and try to get a better price!

 "A bargain - Great with HD signal, only so-so with non-HD" 2008-09-20
By Traveler (New England)
I bought this TV back in Dec. 2007 as a gift for my older parents. They've used it daily ever since.

Before purchasing this model I found a professional review that stated that the HD quality was more than acceptable for this model (keep in mind it's 720p), but that non-HD digital and analog signals were some of the worst you'll find in this price range. I know, you buy a TV like this for watching HD. Problem is, you don't always receive HD.

Before I bought my parents an upcoverting DVD player they used the regular player for this TV and it was just horrible. The picture was worse than what they had with the older analog set. Rushed out and bought the new DVD player. That problem was fixed.

They receive their digital TV over antenna. Keep in mind that on antenna you can get three signals - analog (which disappears in 2009), digital (regular signal for lack of another term) and HD. Since analog is going the way of the dodo there's no need to address that. However, there are plenty of times that the digital signal is not in HD. When that happens, this TV's picture is kind of disappointing. Not horrible, no, but if you're stuck without an HD signal long enough it will make you wonder why you spent so much money.

Keep in mind that there are digital TVs that do handle non-HD signals quite well - but you have to find the professional technical reviews out there to find out which ones they are.

This might sound like I'm bashing this TV, but I don't intend to. It was worth the money. Just buyer beware. Buy this if you know you're going to receive an HD signal on a regular basis. If not, you might want to look for a different model.

"Great quality for the price." 2008-09-06
By Chapwoman (Charlottesville)
I have had this TV for about 5 months (yes, I used my tax rebate). I was lucky and found it on sale as an end of line since the new ones were coming out. I had gone to the store planning to buy the newest Toshiba 37" (not Regza) but got this one instead as it was exactly the same for less money. I love it! I had upgraded from a 21" CRT so it was a huge improvement. I find the picture quality, sound and menus to be very good. My only complaint is when I watch DVDs I have to turn the sound way up, but this is probably not really an issue with the TV itself. I researched the LCD market heavily before I bought and I believe I made the best choice for me. I highly recommend this TV (and Toshiba in general) as a great choice for a great price.

 "BEST PICTURE IN CLASS...BUT" 2009-07-15
By Stephen M. Rosenman (Marlton, NJ United States)
I WANT TO LOVE THIS TV AND I'M SURE i WILL, ONCE i FIND ONE THAT DOES NOT HUM. I am typically a higher end consumer electronics customer. I own 3 other Toshiba flat screens-one for bathroom, one for family room one for bedroom, a Sony flat screen in my study and a Vizio for a guest room. Also own Toshiba DVD players. I needed a 37" in my master bedroom so I went with a familiar brand and I did tons of hands (and eyes) on research. The only bad Toshiba product I've dealt with in the past was a laptop (poor customer service), until now...

First I'll cut to the chase and tell you how it is. You will NOT find a better LCD HDTV over 32" in this price range with this many features that provides high-end picture quality while providing at least entry level inputs/flexibility. In ths category, Sony and Toshiba design their TVs but buy LCDs from a supplier. Samsung and LG make their own. People are going to tell you Samsung 32" + are the way to go and I can tell you first hand (I returned 2 Samsungs) they are not, unless you go LED or DLDP. Samsung has great vibrant colors and noticable contrast, BUT they do it artificially through playing with black levels--there is a great article on Toshiba vs. Sony vs. Samsung and Toshiba LCDs came out on top in terms of real lifelike picture reproduction. I noticed the Toshiba is far better at home than in the store and could not be happier with the picture. Once you fine tune where you need it to be, it is crystal clear, bright and sparkling...love the picture.

Sound is fine, for stock speakers on the TV it does the job well.

here lies the issue: You may get the humming sound as other describe. here is why: The backlight is florescent and turned up past 50 through 100 backlight level you will hear ballast/inverter noise. For me it is unbearable, especially in a bedroom. The only way to service this is to replace the entire LCD panel kit...you dont want to do this. So, I am taking mine back in hopes of an exchange for one that does not hum...

The issue is the inverter/ballast. Not all will be the same. Depends how tight they drill down. I'm just crossing my fingers that I find one that will allow me to adjust backlight very high without humming so much...I'll keep trying b/c th epicture is great at any price.

By L. Ford (Silver Spring, MD USA)
I "purchased" this TV using American Express points. White glove shipping was included so I actually did not pay anything for this set. So, I was quite surprised at how nice it is. I'm very happy with the picture and the sound is decent. The setup is straight forward and the manual is well written. It came with a nice soft cloth to keep it clean and shining. The inputs are not difficult to access. As someone else mentioned, changing viewing inputs is a multi-step process which I haven't seen before. But overall, it's a great TV and I'm quite happy with it.

"Excellent Buy For the Price!" 2009-04-25
By Chantel W (CA)
This turned out to be a great buy for the price! Toshiba makes an excellent product. Before, I purchased the Toshiba 37 inch flat screen TV: I compared this HDTV with other similar units. This flat screen TV definitely holds its own among the majors LCTV including Samsung, Sony, Sharp, and Panasonic. Also, the picture was sharp, clear, and great color contrast. The response time was great (8ms) and the different settings allowed you to adjust for sport, theater, or movie modes. The external speakers were alright for a small room but I ended up connecting the LCTV to my stereo for a more surround sound. The only areas that needed improvement was the delivery process: it took several days longer to ship the flat screen. Nevertheless, the HD programming and the Blu Ray technology was well worth investing in this 37 inch flat screen TV.

 "Imperfect Silence" 2009-04-24
By Donald F. Dal Maso (New York, NY USA)
This Toshiba TV is excellent in all respects except one--the slight hum of the unit that is evident when the image on the screen is supposed to be accompanied by perfect silence.

Does anybody make a perfectly noiseless screen? I'm told this Toshiba is better than some units but, at least at this price, you won't be buying silence.

"Beware of Amazon's Customer Service" 2007-02-07
By Robert Thoms (Cambridge MA USA)
Amazon somehow LOST this TV in transit. Rather than taking responsibility for the loss, they told me they had 10 more days to "find" it and that I should just sit and wait. I begged for a refund, which they would not give. They just kept telling me about their "policies" and how "correct" their associates were. Finally, a full two weeks after the loss, they agreed to refund the money.

The TV meanwhile (bought from Sears and in my car in 5 minutes for $300 less) is great!

Amazon: good prices, but you better hope you don't have any problems because their customer service is non-existant!

By William Lyman (Saint Helena, CA United States)
I bought this TV after two years of watching a fifteen-year-old twenty inch NEC, so naturally it benefits from the comparison. We only use it to watch DVDs and videos and we don't have a hi-def player so I don't know how it compares to other TVs in the hi-def mode, but it regular DVDs look bright, clean, and clear from a viewing distance of twelve feet. We Watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy and it showed up nicely on the 16/9 screen. The sound is tinny compared to the 20-year old Cerwin-Vega speakers through a cheap old Scott amplifier that we use when watching DVDs. For just over a thousand bucks it is a nice TV.

"BE AFRAID of POOR Toshiba Quality" 2010-02-28
By J. Roberts
Like many of those who have rated this product I am really disappointed. We bought this TV for our father, a birthday present, at a cost over $1000. Less than 2 years in, the picture went black and the only answer we get is that the TV is out of warranty. Thank you for your $1000, now take a hike. It is clear that Toshiba knows they have a problem with this model, but I guess they, like Toyota, do the math and screw the customer. BE AFRAID

I still have all but one of the TV's purchased in my lifetime with only one repair bill amongst them. Until I purchased the Toshiba 37-RV530U that is. There is a one year warranty. Toshiba will stretch that an additional 3 months under certain circumstances. So my problems began in month 16: replaced the inverter box...over a $300 repair. Now in month 20: replacing the power supply box...over a $350 repair! I am not optimistic of the lifespan of this TV as I have already paid for it half again in repairs.

I have experienced the pixel loss problem mentioned in an earlier post but I choose to live with it. Very disappointed in Toshiba quality and warranty.

 "Beware of this TV" 2010-01-02
By Kimmy Y (Lancaster, PA)
We ordered this TV in July 2008. The first unit we received had defective sound quality - sounded like bad speaker wiring. We thought we were in luck when we could ship it back for free and get another one. After considerable delay due to back-orders, we received it in late AugustToshiba REGZA 37RV530U 37-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV 2008. The TV was in a room where it was used only a few hours in the evenings. Although the picture quality was beautiful while it lasted, in December 2009 it disappeared completely. With only the sound working, of course Toshiba won't offer any warranties because the problem was outside of the one year purchase date. I think it is criminal that companies can sell a super expensive product that should last a decade, without any repercussions if it lasts only one year and one day. Build the price of the warranty into the product and then we will buy it. Until then, no more toshiba for us.

By Bernard R. Klaich (Buffalo, NY)
Set was 15 months old (just 3 months out of warranty). Picture went out. Failure trouble report stated it was a inverter that went bad. However Toshiba won't sell the inverter without the panel assembly which cost...$1200 (I paid $1000 for the set 15 months ago). Toshiba's position is this is an old set (that was their exact comment) out of warranty and no consideration will be given...so much for a quality product. If you buy this set make sure you have a extended warranty or you will be very, very sorry. Last Toshiba product I will buy...

 "Never buying Toshiba again" 2010-02-18
By Liam Grey
I've had this TV for over a year and I'm not happy with it. Out of the box the picture and sound were both good, just what you would expect for the money. After some time however you discover a particular problem. What I've learned from tech forums since purchasing mine is that many owners of this model are experiencing the same problem. Often when you turn the TV on after it's been off for a while you will get sound but no picture. So you turn it off, count to three, then turn it on and hope you get a picture this time. I usually don't have repeat this routine more than twice. Usually, anyway. Many people on the tech forums for Toshiba reported having to do this many times. Worse yet they have gone through the whole song and dance routine with Toshiba's support and the long and short of it is this: Toshiba is aware of the problem, Toshiba doesn't have a solution for the problem, Toshiba doesn't care. It would help if this TV did what a lot of others do and made a beeping sound when turned on. It takes a few seconds for every flat screen to get the video going. For this Toshiba that would be a particularly convenient feature since you don't know once you turn it on if you are going to get a picture at all. But you at least don't want to second guess yourself as to whether or not you turned the thing on successfully while you wait. Secondly when you feed video to the TV from a PC through the PC-in connector, the upper right hand corner of the screen is frequently distorted - a problem I've since been able to attribute solely to the TV and not any PC. So now I just wonder when I'll switch this on and never get a picture again, while I wish I could go back in time and buy the Sony Bravia. You pay more for Sony but you can seldom go wrong with one.

I've bought Toshiba for years and have never had a problem. I have a Toshiba Television in every bedroom, my den and my living room but this is the last Toshiba I'll ever buy. Pro: when it works it has a beautiful picture. Cons: It hardly ever works. I have to turn the set on and off multiple times to get it to come on and at times it just goes blank. The sound goes off for no reason and you have to turn it off and then back on for the sound to return. I looked on the net to see if anyone else had the same problem and found I was far from alone. Why Toshiba hasn't recalled this set is beyond me. Bye Bye Toshiba!

Picture went out in October. Six weeks later find out the the part for repair will not be available till March 2009. Not a good sign! Still waiting for Toshiba to resolve the issue.

 "HD happy!" 2009-01-23
By R. rogers
This is the first HDTV that we have owned. We purchased it to replace a tube tv that bit the dust. The Regza tv looks very stylish and the picture is great. This thing is perfect for watching the latest dvds on.

The picture is sharp and clear. There is a world of difference between this tv and the Magnavox it replaced. The colors are bright and vibrant. If you haven't compared the old type tvs with these newer ones you need to. You will be amazed.

The sound is a little flat, but the salesman told me that this is common w/flat tvs. He said "flat tvs have flat sound." The audio is good for watching, but you need a surround set up to feel really get into those action scenes.

We liked it so much that we purchased a 26" Regza for our bedroom. My wife and I went for one that was refurbished because we could get one with a dvd player built in. This allowed us to get rid of some of the bedroom clutter.

Why did we wait so long?

My first foray into HDTV was based upon favorable reviews of this product by Consumer Reports in the Dec. 2008 issue. Author explained 720p was more than adequate for a set less than 50 inches. I would agree. Phenomenal, bright picture and set-up is a breeze. Using a rabbit ears in Chicago and picture is excellent. Price via amazon was reasonable.

 "Great TV!!!" 2009-12-24
By T. Kephart (Colorado)
I bought this TV last Christmas season and paid $649...and at the time I was thrilled, compared this to many many other brands, some cheaper, some more expensive. This had by far the best picture of all. Some complain about sound quality but for a TV with small 10w speakers the sound is fine, face it, you can' get theatre quality sound from a TV, if you want that spend the money on a home theatre system. I really have no complaints about the TV, the picture is great from Dish Network, over the air, and an upconverting DVD player. I would highly reccoment this TV.

By L. Ford (Silver Spring, MD USA)
I got this tv using Amex points. Kudos to Amex for including white glove shipping at no charge. Maybe my expectations weren't all that high to start because the TV was free. But, I'm pretty satisfied with it. I use it in my bedroom and do not have it hooked up to an HD receiver yet. I wouldn't recommend this TV for a large room.

Pros: Good picture, decent sound, very easy setup, adequate number of inputs (HDMI, Component).

Cons: The remote isn't that great. It's take multiple steps to do things I've done pushing one button for many years; such as, switching input from satellite to DVD. There's no setting for CC on mute. I can't remember the last time I had a set that didn't have that option. There's an option to reset to factory settings that I was excited about-- it never worked, not even once.

Overall, I'm happy with the set. But, it's hard to say how unhappy I'd be about the cons if I had paid hundreds of dollars. Those are pretty basic things. But, in general, it's a good set.
