"For the price -- I like it!!" 2008-07-04
By Classic (Belleville, NJ)
I got my unit 2 years ago from a sale at Kmart- the unit cost a third of a grand. I needed a HDTV for the apartment living room but didnt have the budget for the plasma/LCD types so I settled for CRT. So far, so good. Since then, a lot more channels upgraded to HD, so I wasn't "left behind." I now have the budget for a 46" or bigger LCD TV. When the time comes, this CRT will be moving into the bedroom, the perfect spot for it's size!

I bought this tv from kmart as a display, not one problem yet, set does need to be tweaked to get best picture, and weighs an amazingly hefty 120 lbs. not for the faint of heart. as with ANY HD crt, watch out for magnets!!!! the can pull these tiny pixels enough to ruin your evening trying to get the set back to normal :)... db

 "An amature speaks up" 2007-03-14
By FlyOrDieTryin' (Granite Falls, WA USA)
I read all the reviews and bought the set early in 2007. It seems to me most the reviews were a bit harsh based on my experience thus far. Besides, in scanning the ratings in Consumer Reports it became obvious that Toshiba consistantly ranks high in [...] tubes. They didn't rank this particular set real high, but for the money, it seemed like a steal.

I bought mine on sale from Amazon for four C-notes, shipping included. A great price for a top-name 30" HDTV-capable set. Reading all the technology info in the product description is enough to put a graduate Electrical Engineer in the fetal position. In laymans terms, the set has it all and can do everything.

I chose the infamous 'free shipping' option and waited 3 weeks for my set. No big deal- the price was right for a 130 pound box that can hardly fit through your door. The set arrived packaged well and undamaged.

I have only an outside antenna for reception, and live on a hill about 25 miles from the nearest transmitting towers so I expected to be reception-challenged. The set up went well as the installation/set-up guide is very well written. I plugged the set in and, as promised, the set automatically conducted its own set-up, scanning the input signals for all stations that could be received. When done, I found I could receive several more stations than I had in the past, including two HDTV signals. That's the good news. The bad news is that I get a message 'signal strength too weak' whenever I try and tune to the HDTV frequencies. My hunch is that I will get reception once I mount my antenna higher above ground level. Stay tuned!

The picture is much better than my previous set- even with the factory settings. Other reviewers are correct when they say you should expect to spend some quality time adjusting the set for the best picture. There is a ton of new technology in this set and if you want to make the most of it, take the time to learn the menues and various settings.

Once I figured out the best settings for various inputs (Video, DVD, antenna), the picture proved to be all that was advertised. I am especially impressed with DVD's- the picture is sharp and color accurate. Those reviewers who are more electromagnetically sophisticated may be let down, but so far I'm more than satisfied.

Update 3/25/07. Regarding the automatic channel scan feature: this is one of the ways to add receivable channels to memory. The TV is supposed to scan all available frequencies and automatically add the ones with good signal strength. I chose this method during the initial start-up, and the set found 6 regular stations and two HD frequencies, but the HD signals were so weak I was never able to actually get a picture.

On a hunch, I later tried adding some channels manually. Much to my surprise, I have been able to add 8 HD stations! And here's something else- I have never seen such unbelievable clarity in TV reception. The HD stations come through with absolutely zero interference, static, etc. The pictures are perfect. I was unaware that HD had this advantage over analog signals. Even during times of very poor weather the pictures remain perfect. All this with just an antenna! (I did buy a good antenna- it's a Turk model 36 meant to receive both analog and HD signals). The cable and dish companies are certainly in trouble. I can't say I feel bad about that.

UPDATE 8/07

OK- the honeymoon is over. After performing flawlessly for months, I can no longer access the main menu and the channel number is no longer breifly displayed. I've tried several things to fix it but now am faced with resorting to warranty coverage to fix. Bummer. Revised rating- 2 stars.

"You get what you pay for" 2006-11-16
By Alexander D. Brown (Mill Valley, CA USA)
I bought this TV at BestBuy, and got my friends to lug this beast into my room. The first thing I noticed while setting it up, was that the batteries it came with were dead. Next, I noticed there were tiny bits of dust behind the screen, where to this day I can see two black specs if I look for them. When I got it set up, the geometry was a bit messed up (4:3 mode's lines weren't straight). By boldy entering the service menu, I was able to correct this issue for the most part.

Next, I noticed bold colors (especially red) ran, and blurred the overall image. I was able to fix this by lowering the contrast to no higher than 17/50. Also, as a previous poster had mentioned, black details are lost in darker scenes. I fixed this by calibrating my TV off of the 'Movie' preset (which keeps contrast low, and brightness medium-high).

However, after much tuning, I went from having a crappy bargain-bin item to a beautiful 1080i picture, and an amazing step up from my SDTV. I can't quite say I recommend the set, but if you feel confident in your abilities to tweak the overall image, and you're on a tight budget, then this set may just do the trick!

 "Disappointed" 2006-08-15
By Munsifali Rashid (Orlando, FL, USA)
I got this TV from BestBuy at a knockdown price as an open-box item. Although it's got a great picture and is feature packed, the TV turned out to be faulty and randomly turns off for no apparent reason, or doesn't turn on at all.

BestBuy offered to replace it with a brand new one, except it's been discontinued, so I opted to return it and get a refund, though anything brand new will be nearly double the price.

Quite disappointed though. Any TV randomly turning off is a big problem, and coupled with the fact that Toshiba are outsourcing the manufacturing of their tube TV's to Orion, and BestBuy discontinuing this new-ish TV so soon rings alarm bells for me. I'd stay clear of this product.

 "Beward vertical red lines" 2010-01-09
By K. Martin (Kenosha, WI)
I've had this TV for 22 months. It worked flawlessly, and I would have given it 5 stars. However, today I turned it on had got the dreaded vertical red line on the right side of the screen. Looks like this is a common problem with Toshiba LCD TVs. This is my first LCD TV -- all my prior TVs were the CRT type, and they held up for years (as opposed to months for this Toshiba). Do your homework before buying this TV.

"Dead Pixels after 12 months" 2008-11-28
By B. George
I had this tv for one year and few days when I noticed dead pixels in an oval shape in the center of the screen. The Toshiba Service reps are horrible and they are refusing to cover this as it is 1 year and 10 days old. I am done with Toshiba products and wouldn't be surprised if this company goes bankrupt because of such bad products and customer service.

"Great TV, possible screen problem" 2008-11-18
By B. Nardi
This TV (REGZA 52HL167) produces an amazingly nice picture. You've seen the details in others' reviews. I agree with them whole heartedly. The only picture I saw that may be slightly better is the SONY Bravia series, but the cost is significantly higher.

A point that could use a bit more emphasis: the matte screen finish on this TV all but eliminates reflections. This is especially important if the TV sits in a room with lots of windows, as mine does. No other LCD TV I've seen (and I've seen many) competes with the REGZA on this score.

Something to beware of, though it's probably a universal problem not unique to Toshiba: the screen can develop an ever expanding blotch of dead pixels. Six months after delivery I saw a row of about 5 pixels which had died near the center of the screen. Daily this started expanding, and after about a month there was a 12 inch by 1/2 inch gash of dead pixels, with a 1-1/2 inch circle of dead pixels in the middle. (This is similar to the head-on airplane pattern described in another review.) The Toshiba warranty covered this completely. The screen was replaced, but it did take several months of waiting. Never mind, I was grateful to have it fixed at no cost. The repair person said he had seen this before and it was caused by a de-lamination of the active LCD elements from the screen. Go figure.

Bottom line is I would definitely buy this TV again. Another I would consider, with a great picture and good price: the Philips 52PFL7422D.

honestly the tv itself is fine - but 3 1/2 months to get a panel replaced on a 3 1/2month old tv is a little ridiculous... our local service center (non toshiba) is mostly to blame - with proper nagging thay are finally replacing the tv with a new one (glory glory) but i fear another failure. customer service is an issue. love it while it works though.

 "Love this TV!!" 2008-10-17
By Software Guru (Seattle, WA)
I've owned this TV for about a year now and wanted to share my experience. I have or had it hooked up to the following components:

HDTV Antenna(DB4)(Coax)

Wii(Component)

Xbox 360 (via component)

Yamaha 5.1 receiver(HDMI)

Roku Netflix Box(HDMI)

Comcast HD DVR Box(HDMI)

Toshiba HD-DVD Player(HDMI)

Dell Home Theater PC(VGA)

It has worked flawlessly with all these components except the Netflix ROKU box, which there seems to be conflict with the HDCP technology and causes an intermittent green screen to appear. Its really more of an annoyance than anything and I've not spent much time troubleshooting it.

When I bought this TV, I was comparing it to the well rated Samsung and Sony models but ended going with this model after comparing them side by side at my local A/V store. The biggest selling points for me were the viewing angle and color vibrancy. A year later, I'm not disappointed with my decision and am still very happy with the vibrancy and viewing angle.

Several months ago, I dropped my cable service and decided to get my content via a HD antenna, Roku Box and my Home Theater PC(Hulu, YouTube, Amazon, ect). I wasn't sure what to expect when I made this change, but have been happy with the selection and especially the video quality through the HD antenna. The built in tuner is very easy to use and once setup it's a no-brainer. I don't know if I'll ever switch back to cable.

Overall, I'm very happy with this TV>

"A bit dated now, but..." 2009-12-08
By Charlie Griffin
I bought this TV about 4 or 5 years ago and just put it in my car to take to the recycle center. With the advent of LCD no one will be in the market for one of these, but maybe Toshiba is interested. The TV worked fine up until 2 weeks ago. I must say that it stayed on damn near 24/7 from June 2007 up until November of 2009. I was no longer working so the TV was my refuge. Anyway, one night I put on the sleep timer. The next morning I turned on the TV, nothing. Pushed all kinds of buttons, disconnected, reconnected, nothing. No power. It just died. I thought a life of only 4-5 years for a Toshiba was poor, but I guess 2 years of nonstop use was pushing it...

 "Luck of the Draw" 2009-01-20
By A. Byro (Manhattan NYC)
I shlepped this thing home and upon plugging it in found that there were large purple splotches in the corners and center of the screen which get worse and the unit warms. I know this has to do with the alignment of the beam, maybe a magnet nearby, whatever, but dunno what to do with it. Called Toshiba and was told it is my own tough luck. So I've owned it for about 2 years now. he purple splotches are annoying, but otherwise its a nice TV. Reading through the reviews here I see that essentially buying them is a crapshoot. They're either really nice or real crap. And the likelihood of getting a lemon seems around 40% which isn't too good. Look, if you're looking for a TV, look for something you're less likely to have come out a piece of rubbish. Or better yet- just get a new HDTV. It's worth it, trust me.

"27A45 Stopped working after only one year!" 2007-07-22
By DC Beachbum (Washington, DC United States)
I purchased the Toshiba 27A45 about one year ago. I was happy with the picture and the sound, especially for the money. Plus, I thought that Toshiba was a reliable brand. After all, I had owned another Toshiba without problems for over 10 years!

I came home yesterday to find the TV would not turn on. I pushed the power button, and nothing! I then did a web search on this model to see if, by chance, there was a fuse or something that I could replace. I discovered that I was not the only person to have problems with this model. From what I gather, the TV has a manufactering defect which causes connections to come loose. Now, after just one year, I'm forced to by another TV. Guess which brand it *WON'T* be!

"Toshiba TV Bulb quit after less than 400 hours" 2010-01-15
By Jack D. (Mo United States)
Nothing you haven't already seen in these reviews but I thought I would throw in my experience too. I bought this TV at Nebraska Furniture Mart thinking I was getting a really good deal about 18 months ago. The TV sits in our rec room that hardly ever gets used unless someone is on the treadmill. I figure 5 hours a week is generous. So after 18 months of use, the bulb blows. This TV should have lasted 15 years according to their figures. I have learned a very expensive lesson here.

"Its all about the lamp" 2009-05-21
By BK4U
I have owned this TV for about a year and a half. The picutre is good, not great. I have a very light room and it doesn't have a great picture during the day. About 3 days ago I heard a loud pop and my lamp went out. They say the lamp should last about 7k hours. Since I didn't run my TV 13 hours per day, I think this is wrong. It looks like this is a very typical issue with Toshiba DLP TV's. I have even read that there are class action law suits regarding Toshiba and there DLP lamps. Its a good TV at a good price until you figure in the price of a new Lamp ($200) every year and a half. I would stay away from this TV or make sure that the lamp id included in any extended warranty that is available.

We have had our 50HM66 Toshiba for just over two years. The picture is awesome, and we have had no problem at all with it: Until today.

My wife turned the TV on and heard a pop. Yep, the bulb is blown.

They are available on the web for around $100. Luckily, we have the extended warranty from the retailer. They will send someone out to replace the bulb.

Lots of incorrect information in the reviews I have looked through.

$600 for a bulb? Hardly...

 "Very Pleased" 2009-02-22
By RGT (Wisconsin)
My mother purchased this television over 3 years ago. She's retired so it's running about 6 hours a day. Still using the original bulb. HD programing and BR discs look great. SD programing is ok. While researching this television, I read about users having problems with frequent bulb replacement. These bulbs are a "metal halide" type, which is why they cost $175 to replace. After reading some electronic forums about these bulbs, I found that one reason for the early bulb failure MAY be powering the tv on and off multiple times a day. For this reason I told my mother once she turned her tv on, not to turn it off until she went to bed. There MAY be something to this seeing that she hasn't had to replace a bulb yet!

 "Mine Works Great!!" 2010-02-18
By P. Mullarkey
I have had this TV since December 2006. I have watched a lot of TV and played a lot of 360 on this TV and I have never had an issue. I have never burnt out a bulb or experienced any issues that the occasional reset can't fix. I have moved twice since owning this TV (once over 6 hours away) and everytime I moved into my new place and plugged in this TV, it worked liked it had never been moved! Obviously the sound sucks but if you buy a TV this big and are not using a surround sound system then you're crazy. The HD is superb with rich colors and crisp picture. I can't speak for anyone else on here but this TV has been a great purchase for me and I would definitely buy it again!

 "After three years..." 2009-11-27
By J. Filkins (Sunny South)
Within weeks of the warrenty expiring, while viewing, there was a loud "pop" and the picture ended. Not only had the bulb failed, bot also the "ballast." Fortunately, an extended warranty had been purchased. The service company picked up the unit and kept it, awaiting parts from Toshiba, for over three months. As others have reported, there were no parts readilly available at the time. Toshiba CS was no help at all.

Since the reapir, the unit has been "uber reilable," with an occassional (rare) push of the reset button. The picture is bright, the sound is excellent. In spite of the difficulties with Toshiba, it has been a worthwhile purchase.

"Love this TV. Until it didn't work anymore." 2009-11-09
By C. Hurwitz
I bought this TV from Costco. After about 3 years, the lamp stopped working. So I replaced it and i didn't mind too much - $200 every 3-4 years is not great, but ok. But then 9 months later, the new lamp stopped working. I replaced it twice only to discover that now the lamp wasn't the problem. Rather it was something much more expensive like the ballast board or the light engine. Rather get another TV.

"62HM95, not as bad as rated here." 2009-05-25
By KEVIN
Well, I have to say I am a little surprised at the bashing this TV has taken from reviewers. We did experience a dead bulb very early on and Toshiba warranty replaced the bulb plus added 2 years to the warranty. Since that bulb, we've not had to replace it. The TV does have some peculiar behaviors, like the fans running all the time or the occasional no antenna signal for HD channels (yes, over the air). We paid $2400 back in 2006 for this and it's still a relative bargain for the size to cost ratio. In short, it's a great 1080i TV for the size, cost and function. The picture is great and it's been hanging on for about 3 years now. I just wish DLP was still as readily available, LCD and Plasma is just too high cost for the size - and frankly DLP works great. My $.02.

"Optic Engine Failed after 3 years" 2009-03-07
By Michelle A. Jarnevic (Lee's Summit, MO)
My Toshiba 62HM95 DLP TV started making a loud buzzing or fan noise. I had an authorized Toshiba repair center come out to look at it and they determined it requires a new optic engine which has the color wheel. Total price of repair is $730.30. I've already had to replace the lamp unit far before it's advertised life expectancy. I called Toshiba and they said too bad. I will never buy another Toshiba product.

"Great picture before it goes black" 2008-08-13
By Scott
I bought this TV because I wanted a quality product..This TV has a great picture and the salesman claimed it was the best Quality available but after 1 year the picture is black. $400 to fix it - BUY A SONY or go to Wal-Mart and buy a cheap flat screen. This does not seem to be isolated to this model but a Toshiba problem and Toshiba seems to look at is as the consumers problem.

 "Home Theater" 2007-05-07
By Mosky
This is a terrific TV. The HD picture is gorgeous. We had one possible issue with our Verizon FIOS service, and Toshiba sent a tech to check things out within about 2 hours of our calling (there was nothing wrong with the TV...it was a tricky FIOS installation in our older home). The controls are fairly easy to navigate (they allow for programming several peripherals), and the manual answers most questions. We are considering another Toshiba HD for elsewhere in the house

"ghost bars/gray bands ruin otherwise beautiful TV" 2007-02-09
By A. Chao (Toronto, ON Canada)
I got this just before Christmas 06, was very excited when I got it. First 10 minutes were of sheer awe and happiness of a kind rarely duplicated. Then, I sat down to watch Lawrence of Arabia on it. Within about 20 minutes of the movie, I noticed that on the big desert scenes, or the sunrise/set scenes, I could see these strange gray bars/bands running vertically on the TV. The horizontal location is approx where SD TV would letter box to, they were on both sides (but worse on the left). So you don't notice it on SD content, but if you are viewing wide content, you see it. The appearance is like someone draped very thin gray cloth over parts of the TV, definitely not something you'd expect from a $3300 TV. No, I am not talking about the thin wires in old Sony Trinitron TV/monitors, those can be ignored because they are very very thin, these are like bands like 4" wide.

Anyway, after a month and a half of waiting for a replacement to come to the dealer I bought it from, I finally got fed up and exchanged it for a Samsung LN-S4695D. Yes, it is a cheaper TV, my dealer was being a jerk, he wanted more money for any other TV. But, at least now, I can enjoy the HDTV without these annoying gray bands, which is something you think would be expected for the price of these TVs.

I was especially disappointed since the 47LZ196 is NOT Toshiba's budget TV, it is their TOP of the line LCD TV. And to have these sort of image quality issues is just not acceptable.

Now if you look around, there is talk on various forums (avsforums most notably), that models with a build date after Dec 06 didn't have the banding issue. Mine was Sept 06 FYI.

Aside from this problem, the TV was gorgeous, no complaints about other aspects of the TV, just the banding was killer.
